Acquired by The Pet Savers Foundation, SPAY/USA, a program of North Shore Animal League America, is a nationwide network and referral service for affordable spay/neuter services. SPAY/USA has grown significantly over the past two decades. The program began with a vision to provide rescue groups and consumers with access to low-cost or free spay/neuter services, and to end the suffering of innocent dogs and cats by reducing the number of unwanted births.

In 2000, The Tools for the Twenty-first Century conference, SPAY/USA's first national conference, included a first-ever panel of scientists that are working on non-surgical solution to spaying and neutering animals. SPAY/USA also advocated early spay/neuter practices to significantly reduce the number of animals that were turned into shelters annually.

Over the last 17 years, SPAY/USA has been expanded to shelters nationwide, and is now the premiere spay/neuter referral program and resource in the country with a cooperating network of 1,200 veterinary practices.

SPAY/USA also works with shelters and rescue groups that want to set up programs in their own area to help those in need. SPAY/USA passionately firmly believes that spay/neuter services should be within reach - geographically and financially - for everyone who has a cat or dog. In 2007, more than 50,000 referrals were made to individuals seeking affordable pet sterilization.

SPAY/USA has more than 1,000 sterilization programs and clinics nationwide with 7,000 top-notch veterinarians in the network as of 2003. The goal is to make spay/neuter services affordable to those who might not otherwise spay or neuter their pets.

Through its efforts, SPAY/USA has developed industry best practices, and continues to expand its efforts in education and advocacy. By working together, we hope to popularize and facilitate spay/neuter services throughout the country and end pet overpopulation. The initiative has helped prevent the potential births of millions of animals that may otherwise face destruction.
